Care & Maintenance of your Streamline Wire

The Streamline Wires and Tie Rods manufactured by Bruntons Aero Products Ltd., have had the threads pre-coated with a Molybdenum Disulphide grease, which should not be removed as it prevents galling of the stainless steel terminal assemblies on the wires. Should this high-pressure grease be accidentally removed, a fresh coating should be applied prior to assembling the wires on the aircraft. Although Bruntons Streamline Wires feature rolled threads, which are much less likely to suffer from galling than cut threads, application of a high-pressure grease is a necessary precaution.

Once in service, wires should be examined frequently as part of the pre-flight inspection. Careful attention should be paid to any sign of nicks or other defects. We recommend keeping the wires coated with a light machine oil or wax to prevent exposure to the elements.

Although rare, failures can occur. The prime cause of failure of wires is vibration due to improper tensioning. Please ensure that your wires are tensioned in accordance with the aircraft designer or manufacturer's instructions. Another cause of failure is stress concentration from nicks, pits or similar defects leading to the propagation of cracks. Aluminium javelins are not recommended (even when padded) as they can concentrate the vibration / stresses. Salt corrosion can occur even with stainless steel wires when the aircraft is exposed to salt spray in coastal areas. This corrosion appears as small greyish spots and can develop in to pitting which in turn can lead to a concentration of stresses and ultimately cracking and failure. However, application of a light oil or wax will help protect your wires from salt spray exposure.
